Surveillance within Sports

/Primary Materials
Surveillance of sports is my main focus throughout the semester. As being an athlete I understand the different perspectives that are placed upon the surveillance of the game and the player. Through analysts’ views, play-by-play analysis, and statistics you develop a sense of why surveillance in sports is important. Though it is many forms of surveillance it is ironic that no matter the sports activity it is always surveillance by cameras and many other recording devices. With countless videos and clips for people to analyze and talk about sports networks were created. Television shows like ESPN and Sports Center became the form of mass media used to reach the nation. These shows analyze the activity that goes on day-by-day as well as keeps you up to date on trades and important issues involving your favorite team, favorite player, and sometimes even your favorite analysts. Though there may be several forms of mass media to present sports through television would have radio and newspaper beat hands down. The reason is that television is always usually up to date and provides you with video to reference to, while radio is just the audio recordings of the game or activity. Sports surveillance and Mass Media compliment each other well, cause without surveillance it would be no point in broadcasting sports across the nation and we would also have no form of knowledge about the sports except for the ones that witness the event. This is why surveillance plays a major part in the delivery of the sports footage to be broadcasted on a mass media network.

So What
In general my research is geared towards those who enjoy sports. It is an exhilarating thing to watch as well as participate in. As technology evolved the dynamic play of the game changed dramatically, it incorporated science into the way the games were played. Though there may be many analysts and scientists to contribute to the study of sports, many people fail to analyze the situation through all angles. The views consist of those from the individual, the analyst, the scientist, and the fan. All these views incorporate to make one entire view of sports, because when you sit back and view the game from another perspective rather than the particular one you’re used to you unlock a new perception. This is the one thing that leaves the sports arena with open doors, due to the different perception and decisions in life lead to different outcomes. It is one thing to critique an athlete and it is also another thing to be in the same situation as you critique, because it is several ways to react in the situation either you perform the perfect reaction or not. All this is what makes surveillance in sports helpful because it is a way to have a record of the situation, as well as the statistics, and all this adds to the ability of people and analyst to analyze an individual’s performance. The primary source I chose adds another dimension to the views on sports; it gives you an insight on how sports have evolved over the years to show you how relevant surveillance is to the sports arena. The other sources provide layers to reveal why surveillance can impact an individual on and off the field, court, or arena.

Research Question
Does the constant surveillance on sports impact the performance of athletes?

Primary Materials Analysis
ESPN is a great primary source. It provides you with analysis from different games as well as events that took place in sports. This is a sports network that dominates the sports analyst industry. Throughout the years ESPN has branched off into several different parts to classify and express sports in an entirely new way. With very few competitive sports networks it is clearly evident that ESPN is the best one in its class. Due to the diversity of sports coverage ESPN is the worldwide leader in a sports affiliated society.
Since ESPN has multiple channels it airs not just one broadcast, but it plays several and it also covers everything played out in sports. ESPN is known as the Worldwide Leader in Sports. On its website, you can watch live videos, gather information on a favorite athlete, check stats, view just about anything available to record about sports. This is the greatest network for sports fans based upon the clout that ESPN has. While breaking ESPN down into different categories I discovered that it ventures into so many different classifications based upon sports. The wide range of diversity shows how relevant ESPN would be as a primary source. It leads you into an analytical view, while it also challenges your scientific knowledge at the same time allowed you to look at sports in an entirely new manner.
Throughout the years ESPN has become the greatest sports network. The competition it has from Sports Center fuels ESPN to be the best it could be
. With several shows like Football Foolies, NFL’s Greatest Players , and also the games being aired on TV raises the rating of the network. The public goes to ESPN to catch up with all the highlights from the games or any sports activity they might have to catch up on. This is one thing that made ESPN a sufficient source for information on sports because they keep the information new and relevant. ESPN has expanded how people also perceive their favorite athletes due to the show they created entitled Sports Science. Though this show is based upon the science behind the athletes’ movement the perception is different, it gives you a more in-depth view on sports. This leads to the different branches that are produced by viewing sports; they consist of the perception of the player, analyst, the fan, and the person doing the surveillance. These Videos add several different elements to visually show you how surveillance affects athletes performance on an off the field.
